How Long Does It Last?

Asphalt roof shingles are typically marketed on a basis of 20 up to 50 years which is associated with a certain warranted life by the manufacturer. The actual life that a shingle has before it has to be replaced is normally less than the advertised life, and is affected by the amount of heat the shingle is exposed to on the roof and other environmental and physical factors. The amount of heat that the roof experiences is dependent on the roof design and orientation to the sun, the amount of cooling within the attic below and the climate in which the shingle is placed.

Just as the life of the shingle is dependent on these factors, so is the life “extension” of Shingle Life. In general, with proper application of Shingle Life, one can normally expect a life extension of over 3 years, and more with higher levels of working ingredients.

How Safe is Shingle Life?

First of all, Shingle Life is a non-hazardous, non-toxic, non-flammable water based emulsion. It will not harm shrubbery, grasses or other vegetation should some over spray or run off occur. Any spray on non-shingle surfaces, such as siding, decks, etc., can be easily cleaned with soap and water. Since Shingle Life contains droplets of soybean oil, the roof surfaces where Shingle Life has been applied will be more slippery than the non-treated roof surfaces. For this reason, Shingle Life should be applied with caution, leaving the area next to the ladder or other means of exiting the roof until last.

Extending the Life of Installed Asphalt Roof Shingles

Shingle Life is a patent protected, revolutionary new product that will extend the life of asphalt shingle roofs. It is environmentally friendly, non-toxic, non-flammable and will not discolor the roof.

How Does It Work?

This loss within the asphalt sub-strate affects the shingles by causing them to dry out, become brittle, often curl and crack. As the asphalt dries out, it loses its adhesive properties which serve to hold onto the granules that are there to minimize the effects of harmful UV rays. Shingle Life, a water based soybean oil emulsion, replaces the components of the asphalt that evaporate or leach out over time. A simple, garden type pump sprayer is all that’s needed to apply Shingle Life, although other tools can also be used.

When applied, the water component quickly evaporates, leaving tiny droplets of soybean oil to gradually absorb into the asphalt, providing the softening affect.

Why Use Shingle Life?

Depending on the geographic region of the country, the type and advertised life of the replacement shingle, the complexity of the roof design, degree of pitch and other factors, the cost to install new shingles may range from $75 - $250 per "square" or 100 square feet of roof and tearing off the old shingles can add another $30 - $50 per square. One application of Shingle Life may save up to 95% of the re-roofing cost.

In addition, re-roofing generates an estimated 6.8 million tons of waste asphalt shingles each year - equivalent to nearly 3% of all municipal solid waste.

Finally, there is no other product on the market that serves to rejuvenate installed asphalt roof shingles!
