My Project Plan

What Should You Do Before Applying Shingle Life to Your Roof?

  • Inspect your roof for missing, damaged, broken or split shingles and replace them
  • Inspect your roof for damaged or dried roofing cement around pipes, vents, skylights, and chimneys. Replace or repair as necessary
  • Remove all leaves, tree branches and other debris from your roof

What Do I Need to Apply Shingle Life?

Shingle Life can be applied by sprayer, brush or roller although the recommended method is by spray. A typical garden type hand pump sprayer is sufficient, although it may pay to rent a low pressure pump and hose with a spray wand. This will eliminate the necessity of moving pails of Shingle Life to the roof.

What is the Coverage Factor?

The suggested coverage of Shingle Life is one gallon per square of roof (100 sq. ft.)

What is the Current Condition of Your Roof?

A thorough inspection of your roof should be made in advance of any type of roof repair, treatment or replacement.

If your roof is relatively new, perhaps replaced in the last 5 years, and is installed over a well ventilated attic space, it probably appears in good condition even though the asphalt substrate of the shingles has already begun to lose its volatile elements. Roofs in warmer climates will usually deteriorate faster than those in more temperate zones. This may first appear as stiffer shingles and then progress to curling of the edges. As the shingle continues to lose more volatile elements within the asphalt substrate, the "holding power" of the asphalt decreases and causes a loss of granules. These "lost" granules are commonly found in gutters even though it may not be visually apparent that there has been any granule loss.

It is important that the granules remain on the shingle as they are there to perform two important functions.  First, they give the shingle color, so a loss of granules may tend to darken or otherwise change the shingle’s color, often in patches or streaks.

Second, and most important to the life of the shingle, the granules serve to reflect the sun’s UV rays, keeping the shingle cooler.

When is the Best Time to Apply Shingle Life?

Since asphalt shingles start to age as soon as they are exposed to the elements, Shingle Life should be applied within the first five years after installation and repeat applications are recommended every three years for optimum results.

Shingle Life can be applied at any time throughout the year but the evaporation rate of the water emulsion and absorption of the soybean oil droplets will occur faster during warmer weather. It is recommended that you apply Shingle Life when the outside temperature is above 50 degrees Farentheit.
