SHINGLELIFE FAQ

What is ShingleLife?

ShingleLife is a new, environmentally friendly product for asphalt shingle roofs.

What does ShingleLife do?

ShingleLife acts to prolong the life of installed asphalt shingle roofs.

What is the primary benefit of ShingleLife?

Cost savings. Applying ShingleLife costs roughly 5 – 10 % of the cost of re-roofing.

How does ShingleLife work?

Just as hand lotion restores dried and rough skin, ShingleLife rejuvenates installed roof shingles. ShingleLife is a proprietary water based emulsion containing a methyl ester of soybean oil (MESO) and several emulsifying agents. When applied to the roof shingles, the water in the emulsion quickly evaporates, allowing the MESO droplets to be absorbed into the asphalt substrate. This absorption process serves to instantly restore the asphalt's volatile elements that have evaporated or leached out as the shingle ages, causing the shingle to be more supple and pliable.

What roof life extension can be expected?

With the proper application, 3 – 5 years.

Will ShingleLife change the color of my shingles?

No. When initially applied, the roof will have a “wetted look” which will be gone when the coating dries, which may be hours or days, depending on the roof's ambient temperature.

How is ShingleLife applied?

While ShingleLife can be brushed or rolled on, the fastest method is to spray it on. Either a simple, hand-held garden sprayer can be used or a low pressure spray from an electric or gasoline powered pump. ShingleLife comes already mixed so no stirring or agitation is required. Coverage is one gallon of ShingleLife per square of roof surface.

When should ShingleLife be applied?

ShingleLife should be applied when the shingle surface is 50 ° F or higher and neither rain or freezing temperatures are expected for at least 48 hours after application.

Are there things that need to be done to the roof prior to applying ShingleLife?

Any damage to the roof and shingles should be repaired (broken shingles, bad seals around chimneys, pipes, vents, skylights, known leaks, etc.). Any cleaning of rust, algae, fungus or other foreign matter should be accomplished prior to applying ShingleLife.

What changes in the shingles appearance will be seen?

If the shingles have aged to the point where they are starting to curl or bow, ShingleLife will tend to reduce that affect. Upon closer examination, all shingles will appear more supple and pliable, similar to when they were first applied.

Will ShingleLife damage my siding, skylights or deck?

No. Should any over spray occur, soap and water is all that's needed for clean-up.

Will ShingleLife harm my shrubs or grass?

   No. ShingleLife is non-toxic, non-flammable and bio-degradable.

Will ShingleLife stop the roof from leaking?

No. All leaks must be repaired prior to applying ShingleLife.

Will ShingleLife waterproof the roof?

No. Most shingle manufacturers caution against applying any type of waterproofing and if used, may void the shingle warranty.

Will applying ShingleLife void my shingle warranty?

While no shingle manufacturer has publicly endorsed ShingleLife we are aware of tests that a major shingle manufacturer has done with ShingleLife on their shingles and have not issued any prohibitions against our product. Since ShingleLife serves to make the shingle last longer, it is difficult to imagine any shingle manufacturer objecting to its use.

Will ShingleLife remove algae or fungus?

  No.

Will ShingleLife promote algae or fungus?

   No.

Is this a new or unproven technology?

Absolutely not. The process of rejuvenation of asphalt surfaces, such as on parking lots, driveway, and many flat roofs has been around for decades. It has just never been considered for roofs with asphalt shingles until now.

Are there any other products on the market similar to ShingleLife?

No, plus ShingleLife is patented which ensures there will not be any competing products for many years to come.

Will ShingleLife work on flat (Built Up Roofs)?

If that roof has an asphalt surface, yes. However, ShingleLife is not patented for such applications and many BUR's need repairs prior to any application of a rejuvenation product.

Will ShingleLife work on wood shake shingles?

No. ShingleLife is specially formulated for asphalt shingles.

Are there any other benefits to using ShingleLife?

There are many. First, by rejuvenating the asphalt substrate, the granules will have better adhesion, reducing granule loss. Second, since the asphalt substrate will be more pliable, the negative affects of foot traffic on the roof will lessened.

Third, since there are over 7 million tons of waste asphalt shingles deposited in landfills each year, equivalent to nearly 3% of all municipal sold waste, the use of ShingleLife will reduce this amount and help our environment.

Are there any special safety precautions to be aware of when applying ShingleLife?

Since ShingleLife is non-toxic, nonflammable and environmentally friendly, the most important safety precautions are those which should be taken by anyone working on sloped roofs. In addition, just as paint instructions warn not to paint oneself into a corner, one should apply ShingleLife starting at the furthest location from the ladder or scaffold to avoid having to walk on areas covered with ShingleLife.

Is ShingleLife available in other than 5 gallon containers?

Currently ShingleLife is only available in 5 gallon containers, however if customer demand dictates, 55 gallon sizes are possible.

What pressure should be used to apply ShingleLife by electric or gasoline powered pump?

A garden hose pressure of 40-60 psi or higher is adequate for applying ShingleLife, depending on nozzle tip.
